Put some Scandinavian style in your home…

5 Sep

I just stumbled across this store Littlephant and their gorgeous things for kids and grown ups alike. Created by designer and illustrator Camilla Lundsten the product line was recently awarded “best kids design” by the Scandinavian  magazine “Family Living”.   With their whimsical and bold prints its easy to see why.

They have a full range of products for babies & kids and the home but I am particularly in love with their gorgeous fabrics.

I’m a big fan of Minted’s cards  and have used them on several occasions to make birth announcements and holiday cards. I love their super high-end papers and great designs so I was stoked to hear they are now doing customizable art prints.

Check out some of these fabulous designs.

Shades of Blue…

14 Jul

I’ve decided that I am going to paint Charlie’s room a bold bright blue.  Originally I had planned on it being a soothing bunny grey but now that we are out of the baby stage and into the nursery stage I am mixing it up a bit and want more color in there for his bright toddler mind!

I bought him this bedding from Dwell for his room when he transitions into a big boy bed so I need to incorporate this into the design…

Dwell Studio Skyline set

The only question is – how blue should I go???…..

This nursery has a deep vibrant blue on the walls which I love, and Charlie’s room gets lots of light so I think this scheme would be ok with white ceilings and some white walls.

The shades I’m considering are either Valspar’s  Splish Splash or Benjamin Moore’s  Clearest Ocean Blue. I want that vibrant  color so finding the perfect shade will be my challenge! Have you decorated with such a bold color in your home? Any advice on how to best make it work? Let me know in the comments.

Developing your own Mom Inc.

21 May

I’ve often wondered how some of my favorite female designers got started with their businesses and how they keep their amazing companies running and design ideas flowing when they have small children constantly demanding their attention. I personally struggle everyday with the balance between full-time work, the design process (and reality!) of renovating our home, chronicling it all here on this blog whilst meeting the needs of my small children so I can’t begin to imagine the added stress of being the boss at work on top of it all!! Well now there is a book that can help….

Meg Mateo Ilasco  (of Anthology Mag.) and Cat Seto wrote their book Mom, Inc to help moms get inspired, organized and to share some of their own insights into starting a successful business from home.

Chronicle book’s Mom Inc. avail now.

Profiled moms include many of my favorites like blogger Gabrielle Blair (Design Mom), designer Courtney Novogratz,  Lorena Siminovich (from Petit Collage) and Christiane Lemieux of DwellStudio, as well as many more. It’s really insightful to see how these women who are hugely successful in their respective fields manage to balance motherhood whilst starting their businesses and the book is choka full of great tips like how to write a business plan and honest advice that should set you off on the right path.

Want to know more? Then check out this interview Cat Seto did with my friend Sophie from The Marin Scoop about her inspiration for the book and watch this cute trailer for the book:

Splurge vs Steal: To teepee or not to teepee…..

8 May

I love a teepee – not only is the word a LOT of fun to say but they  are awesome play spaces for the littles in your life and can be used indoors or out.

I like the traditional ones like this one from Etsy.

Lollipop flower teepee tent

So cute and a great design piece in a kids room. However you could save some $$$ by buying a plain one from here and adding your own decor to it.

I imagine it sitting in a kids room looking something like this:

What an awesome way to fill a corner in a kids room.

Desperately seeking the perfect kids rug??!

7 Apr

I’m having a rug moment as I recently bought a rug for Jack’s room and now I officially hate it. It doesn’t match anything (its dull grey & turquoise) and it is fluffing like crazy (beware the pure wool rug for a kids room for this very reason!).What was I thinking? I am having to vacum almost everyday to keep the fluff under control.

So I’m on the hunt, yet again for a perfect kids room rug.  Once I can convince my husband that we wont lose any money as I can sell the new-ish rug then I will be free to purchase  another..hmm..anyone need a shedding rug???

This blue brick rug has a great geometric design and could be used in both sex rooms as its a bright turquoise blue.

The colors in this stripe rug are amazing and what’s not to love about stripes hey?

Blue green stripe rug

I adore this chevron print dhurrie rug from pottery barn kids. I would need to buy a thick rug pad to put underneath it but its affordable enough that this isn’t an issue.

Chevron Print Dhurrie rug

Finally this isn’t relevant to my search in anyway but I loved it too much to not share!!  This candy dot rug  from Land of Nod is just perfect for a modern little girls room. I dont have a little girl to decorate for but if I did you could betcha this would be high on the list!!

How to become an Ikea Hacker.

29 Mar

I love Ikea – its has great design at great prices but sometimes I wish buying a piece from there felt a little bit more unique. The easy answer to this  (without cracking out your paint & hardware supplies!!) might just be one of these awesome companies that allow you to “hack” your Ikea furniture and make it a bit more unique.

Pretty Pegs: As seen on design sponge, this company allows you to change the legs easily on your Ikea beds & sofas. Its a super simple way to completely overhaul the look of a sofa.

Pretty legs for your Ikea furniture..

With their wide range of pretty legs you can get a custom look for your bed or sofa easily – what a fantastic idea and I cant believe Ikea didn’t think of this as an option before! My favorites are the bright yellow legs on the grey sofas – talk about a brilliant way to add a pop of color into your home. They aren’t the cheapest legs but they do make a standard sofa that little bit extra special.

Some new leg options...

My next favorite Ikea hacking company  is the previously mentioned folks over at BEMZ. They create custom covers for your Ikea beds and sofas & chairs so you can get exactly the look you want. They have over 180  fabric options, a designer fabric collection and can have your covers ready in about  3-5 weeks and all come with a 3 year guarantee! Plus you can order in 5 free fabric samples to help you make your choice.

Check out some of these awesome designs….

Lastly is  Mykea, who offer you the chance to decal your basic Ikea furniture to give it a completely different look and feel. It’s a fun idea, doesn’t cost much to achieve and I like their graphic designs although  most of them feel better suited for a kids room than  an adult room.

It’s a great and non permanent way to add a bit of flair to your basic Malm drawers of Hemnes sets!

Have you ever done an Ikea hack? Share your project with us in the comments.
