Claw foot Directors table from H&H Home

Check out this gorgeous side table from H&H Home. Yes its beautiful and yes you could spend $615 on it OR you could freestyle  and get this side table from Urban Outfitters for a mere $74.oo and add a custom cut mirrored top to it.

I know which one I will be going for!!!

Splurge vs Steal: A Hanging Garden Chair

7 Aug

I LOVE this chair from Anthropologie. Its amazing and would be stunning inside or outside the home. It comes in at $498 tho so it’s not a cheap & cheerful buy that’s for sure.

But check out this one from a store I found online called Wind & Weather. It’s equally as pretty and is half the price at a meagre $200. Unfortunately it is out of stock right now but hopefully they will get more in soon??!!

Splurge vs Steal : A Leather Butterfly Chair

31 Jul

I am obsessed with these butterfly chairs. I love the color, the look, the simple styling  – it just feels so luxurious to take a simple college like design and remake it in leather.

I always thought that CB2 had the best deal as they have this awesome butterfly chair for only $398.

But  then Cost Plus World Market released their 2012 fall furniture range and check this out…a leather butterfly chair for only $199!!!

Of course it’s not as sturdy looking as the CB2 one but the style is almost the same! I would style mine with a mini sheepskin draped over the back near to my fireplace.

Which one would you go for?

Splurge Vs Steal: A Glass Petal Chandelier

24 Jul

This Chandelier from Layla grace is just gorgeous and I love the detail on the glass leaves. It would be stunning in a dining room or any room you wanted to have that pretty vintage vibe.

Its not cheap tho at a whopping $4498…such is the price of designer beauty I guess!

However I found this lamp as an alternative. It doesn’t have half the detail or stylings of the Layla Grace one  but it will give you the same vibe for a far more affordable $299.

Splurge vs Steal: Moroccan Berber Rugs

10 Jul

Moroccan Berber rugs are making a big comeback into interior design – their warm shaggy pile feels super luxurious and they look great in a living room or bedroom environment.

Rugs USA has one of these traditional style Berber rugs for the pretty sum of  $2939  – for which price you could probably fly to Morocco yourself and pick one up in the Medina!!!

So I was excited to see that West Elm has one of a similar style for $499 for a 5×8 . Of course it’s not traditional in its weaving but it is made of pure New Zealand wool and gives you the look and feel of a Berber at an inch of the price.

Better get yours fast – I can see these selling out!

Splurge vs Steal: Black & White Stripe Rugs

19 Jun

Adding a bit of graphic black & white into your home is a quick and easy way to modernize the space. I have been eyeing up this rug by Madeline Weinrib for a LONG time….it would be great in my eldest sons bedroom.

But I can’t justify the expense of a gorgeous designer wool rug for a kid’s bedroom when its going to get slowly destroyed by my two active boys!!!

So check out this cheaper Ikea version at only $199 its the perfect way to get the look for a lot less.

This is going out of stock soon so if you want it I suggest calling your local Ikea fast!!

Splurge vs Steal: A Tom Dixon Light

5 Jun

I LOVE these Tom Dixon lights – hung together they simply look amazing over a kitchen island or a dining table. He has a range of styles in this Beat range called tall, fat & wide,  and they are not as expensive as some of his other lights, these ones start at $490 a piece. I love the hammered metal look and the copper glow from inside the shade.

The Tom Dixon Beat Light

But even $490 is out of the price range for lots of folks so I was stunned when I discovered a pendant that is nearly identical for $28.39 each!!!!

It’s so similar that it’s clearly a total design knockoff but what a crazy affordable price.

Splurge vs Steal: A Parsons Bookcase

30 May

I love open shelves for their practical nature and the ability to use them as storage and as a design feature.

I saw this bookcase  on amazon and I love its bright colors and the thickness of its build . Its made by the Home Decorators Collection and is reasonably price at $173.99  (don’t you love it when manufacturer’s put random pricing on things??!)

Parsons bookcase

It reminds me so much of another named parsons bookcase avail from West Elm. This shelving unit is much more expensive at $549 but it is a bigger piece and is made of high quality engineered wood.

What do you think- is it worth the extra money to buy something more sturdy and bigger?

Splurge vs Steal : An Ombre Chair!

22 May

This week’s splurge vs steal is a little different as it requires a bit more than making a smart shopping choice, its more  a touch of DIY!

I fell in love with this Anthropologie bench a while ago as I just love  the paint job and that its seriously on trend with its ombre effect…

Windsor Love Seat from Anthropologie

but its got a CRAZY price tag attached to it so I thought I would have to lust after it from afar. And then I saw this post  on design sponge about doing your own. Incredible.

So now my eyes are peeled for a flea market wooden chair/bench find that I can try my ombre paint skills on!!

Splurge vs Steal: Eames molded plastic chairs

15 May

I love  Eames designs, clean and classic and instantly recognizable in anyones home. I am particularly in love with these chairs for the dining room:

Eames molded plastic chair

but at $399 a pop I can honestly say they wont be making an appearance in my home anytime soon. Sigh.  So what’s a girl to do ? – well you consider a well produced design knock off instead. Check these ones out from Overstock.

Overstock white molded chair

They look pretty similar right?  They will give you that Eames vibe but without the designer price tag. These are $179 for a pair. A total bargain!

I wish great design was more affordable as I really do believe in buying originals wherever possible, but, when you are renovating a home on a budget it’s not always feasible.
