Life has been going at a roller coaster pace recently but I have been able to sneak a bit of time to pick out a color for our formal living room. I wanted an accent wall and after being inspired by the images below we finally made our choice…..
Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy – it’s a rich dark grey/navy tone which I cant wait to get on the wall! Updates and pictures will follow but in the meantime here’s some other homes to drool over…

Have you used a dark color in your home? Any styling tips/tricks?

I just stumbled onto this website thanks to a weird series of clicks and redirects and its choka full of great design but my heart actually started pounding when I saw this chandelier…..
Brubeck sculptural lamp
It’s just so beautiful I don’t know what else to say…other than I MUST have this in my home!
And then I kept clicking and saw this one….
Botti ceiling lamp
and then this…….
Ike vintage lamp
oh god make it stop this is killing me… its TOO MUCH …. I want them ALL. HELP.
Yippeeee Zara Home is coming to the USA… in exactly 9 days. Very soon you’ll be able to get this kind of tray gorgeousness in your home…
And there’s this standing tray table that I love (Yes slight tray obsession going on over here!!)
Wooster Tray Table
And I LOVE this gold Vase….
Sigh – come to me my pretties!!! Only 8 more sleeps.
We are quickly having to choose a tile scheme for our guest bathroom. As it’s a windowless room with no natural light I knew immediately that I wanted to keep it as clean and serene as possible. Hence all white became the color scheme mantra. It’s also a room that is pretty small so we have to utilise the space as best as possible – unfortunately for our guests this means no bath. We have decided to rip it our in favor for a walk in shower instead to keep the room feeling as spacious as possible.
Looking around for inspiration I have decided on a combination of these bathrooms:
Remodelista bathroom via Desire to Inspire.
I love the white subway tile and the rectangle Mosaic flooring in this image. Also the clear simple glass shower panel will be perfect for our small guest bath however I want to do something curbless so that people dont trip.
Modern Vanity from Ikea via Vtwonen
A simple white vanity that floats off the floor will also help keep the room feeling spacious whilst providing storage. I love the shine on the mosaic tiles in this image but they were vetoed by Jon!!
Finally the shower panel, hardware and the tiling in this last image are just perfect. I also like the way they have been paired with a softer color on the walls – this is something I hadn’t thought about doing but now I am thinking about ways in which to bring some color into this space.

What are the other essentials for a guest bath that we might be missing? Any advice?
Have you heard of the Paumes design book series? They are AMAZING. I am seriously addicted and need to stop buying them!!!
Edition PAUMES is a small and dynamic family-run Japanese publishers, who work in close contact with artists and designers all across Europe on different projects. The books are available in either French or Japanese but the language almost doesn’t matter as the imagery is so inspiring – the homes they feature are incredible and I would happily give my left arm to live in one of them!!
My favorites are the kids rooms and the family style books but there’s over 50 to choose from so there’s something to suit all homes – which one will you go for?
One of the big secrets of the interior design world is to shop in unexpected places for your home. Designers know that select kids stores have incredible grown up design that you can use to add chic and inexpensive accents into your home. In fact Emily Henderson talks about finding great drape solutions at kids stores in her blog post here. I’ve been known to buy things for my bedroom from the Land of Nod . I’ll shop anywhere that has great design at an affordable price!!
My personal favorite is Pottery Barn Teen…You would never know it but they have tons of chic grown up designs for teensy prices. Check out some of these fabulous finds….
Elegant teardrop chandelier
This chandelier will be making an appearance in my guest room very soon!!! It’s such a gorgeous and simple design and for only $129 who cares that its made from acrylic beads and not glass??!!
Boho Bedding Set
The mix of dots and print on this bedding is very on trend and super affordable – this would look at home in any grown up space.
I love the simplicity of this walnut mirror and it’s currently on sale for an incredible $189!!! Now that’s a bargain for a solid wood mirror!

There’s literally so much choice that I recommend browsing here.
What’s your favorite alternative decor store for your home? Have you found great items in places you would never normally think to look???
This weekend we hit up the Alameda Antique Fair for the first time. I wasnt entirely sure what to expect and it was a bit of a risk taking the youngsters with us but we had a great day. Set on an old naval base in Alameda with views over the bay to San Francisco this fair is the largest in Northern California with over 800 dealer stands to browse around. It happens on the first sunday of the month and goes from 6am (yikes!!) till 3pm. The entry price varies but the earlier you go the more expensive it is to get in.
Here’s my quick tips for shopping at this fair:
- We arrived at about 10am and there were already people carting off trolleys full of goodies. The early birds get the best worms here!
- There’s plenty of parking as the lot is massive but be warned after 8am you will end up parking quite far away from the entrance to the fair which means quite a hike to the start of the fair, and then the fair itself is enormous so wear comfy shoes!
- Take a stroller if taking kids, they will get tired. Guaranteed.
- There’s plenty of food trucks so don’t worry about food options.
- Be prepared to spend time browsing!
- Take cash with you….you dont want to walk all the way back to the ATM if you spot a bargain!
There was tons of great glassware. I loved these vintage phones & crates. Check out the Union Jack chairs – these were part of a dining set which might be a bit much all together.
My son loved this old motorcycle (ahem maybe next time!!!), I loved this mid-century modern lounge set up. How freaky is this dolls head in a glass dome? The print on this chair was amazing – great blues & greens.
I loved this chandelier but it was a little too long for our ceilings. A button mirror is a nightmare come true for me, I have a phobia of buttons – true story! This red metal side table that would make a perfect addition to a family room for some industrial chic. Gorgeous vintage bar cart. Enough said!!!
Overall we had a great time and there was some amazing things but we came home empty-handed . I suppose we weren’t in a buying mood simply because its hard to know what we need right now for the house. If you are in the market for some antiques and vintage curiosities however I highly recommend a visit.
I am obsessed with these butterfly chairs. I love the color, the look, the simple styling – it just feels so luxurious to take a simple college like design and remake it in leather.
I always thought that CB2 had the best deal as they have this awesome butterfly chair for only $398.
CB2 Leather Butterfly Chair
But then Cost Plus World Market released their 2012 fall furniture range and check this out…a leather butterfly chair for only $199!!!
Cost Plus World Market Butterfly Chair
Of course it’s not as sturdy looking as the CB2 one but the style is almost the same! I would style mine with a mini sheepskin draped over the back near to my fireplace.
Which one would you go for?
This Chandelier from Layla grace is just gorgeous and I love the detail on the glass leaves. It would be stunning in a dining room or any room you wanted to have that pretty vintage vibe.
Layla Grace leaf glass chandelier
Its not cheap tho at a whopping $4498…such is the price of designer beauty I guess!
However I found this lamp as an alternative. It doesn’t have half the detail or stylings of the Layla Grace one but it will give you the same vibe for a far more affordable $299.
